Three area volleyball players honored by WMVOA

Kayla Clementz, Kadiatu Kellah and Laura Kooistra were alll honored as this yea’rs West Michigan Volleyball Officials Association scholarship. Although all three will be attending different universities next year (Kooistra plans to attend Michigan, Kellah is leaning toward Michigan or Michigan State, and Clementz will attend Grand Valley State University) they all want to be doctors when they graduate.

East Grand Rapids to play Fruitport in the semifinals for volleyball

East Kentwood will face off against Bloomfield Hills Marian on Friday at 5:30 p.m.. East Grand Rapids is set to play Fruitport at 7:15 tonight. Both matches will take place at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

East Kentwood is making their first semifinal appearance since winter 2007. East Grand Rapids has never reached the semifinal round before, but they have played Fruitport four times this season.

Grand Rapids Christian season ends in a tough loss against rival East Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids Christian volleyball team finished an outstanding season with a close loss to rival EGR. Taylor Gates had 38 assists and four aces and outside hitter Katie VanderWeide with 21 kills.

Hudsonville wins regional championship in volleyball

Hudsonville stunned Class A powerhouse Rockford in five sets (25-23, 18-25, 12-25, 26-24, 15-9) to advance to Tuesday’s Class A quarterfinal at Rockford, where they’ll play East Kentwood. This is the first time Hudsonville had won a regional championship since 1981.

East Grand Rapids will play Grand Rapids Christian in volleyball regional final

Abbie Gortsema a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, helped East Grand Rapids escape with a 3-1 win (27-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20) over Unity Christian in a Class B regional semifinal Tuesday. EGR (44-10-1) reached the regional finals for the first time since 2004 and will face Grand Rapids Christian at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Grand Rapids Christian topped Wayland, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-16), in their semifinal.

Fremont volleyball tops Hemlock to advance to regional finals

Fremont topped Hemlock 3-1 (25-17, 30-28, 16-25, 25-23) in the regional semifinals. Fremont will be making their second regional finals appearance in three years, having lost to Fruitport in 2008. Senior Caroline Heitzman had 24 kills and five blocks, Morgan Medd made 22 digs, McKenze Supernaw had 13 points and two aces and Kaitlyn VanBoven added five blocks to lead the Packers.

Hudsonville volleyball will advance to regional finals

The Hudsonville volleyball team topped Grand Haven 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20) in a Class A regional semifinal on Tuesday. Senior Anna Flory and junior Karli Keur combined for 34 digs to propel Hudsonville to a regional final against Rockford. Rockford knocked off Petoskey, 3-1, in the other regional semifinal.

White Cloud girls volleyball earns district title

White Cloud captured the district championship title with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-14 win over Evart. Kayti Welch had three aces, 29 assists and 13 digs, while Sarah Feldpausch added two aces and eight kills.

East Kentwood will advance in volleyball districts

Jalyn Smith and the rest of her East Kentwood earned a 3-0 win (25-11, 25-14, 25-10) over Caledonia in a district opener Tuesday. East Kentwood (42-14) will face Ottawa Hills at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in a district semifinal.

Halle Peterson to play volleyball at Michigan State

Rockford’s Halle Peterson will travel to East Lansing with her teammates to watch her future team Michigan State face Ohio State in volleyball. Peterson’s teammate Andrea Kacsits will be playing for Ohio State next year.
