As a receiver in high school football, your chances can be limited. Teams tend to keep the ball on the ground more often than not, so any pass thrown your way needs to be treated with the utmost importance. But if you can rack up over 22 yards per catch, like Grand Haven’s Mike Moorehead, or even over 45 or even 50 yards per catch like South Christian’s Brandon Hall and Thornapple Kellogg’s Patrick Bobolts, respectively, then you can expect more balls to be thrown your way.

Check out the top-20 receivers from week 8 in West Michigan high school football below.

Top-20 quarterbacks and running backs from week 8 can be found here.

There is going to be a lot of intense Division II district action in West Michigan starting next week. Two of the top teams in Division II, Unity Christian and Northview, are in separate districts but will still have to face some tough teams to keep going in the state tournament. District #28, however, could go to anyone.

District #27

Teams: Byron Center, Hamilton, Holland, Holland Christian, Unity Christian, Thornapple-Kellogg, Zeeland East, Zeeland West

The Lowdown: Also known as “Division OK-Green.” Expect this district to mimic the conference tournament. Wyoming Park and Wyoming Rogers are absent (more on them later) and Holland and Thornapple-Kellogg have been thrown into the mix, but every other team belongs to the OK-Green conference and will no doubt enter state playoffs with memories of the conference tournament fresh in their minds. However, you certainly can’t ignore Holland. They haven’t played a lot of the teams in this particular district, but they have proven themselves time and time again against strong teams.

Players to Watch: Travis Vegter, Greg Timmer (Unity Christian); Ryan Jacobs (Holland Christian); Jake Carter, Hadyn Beal (Holland)

Prediction: Unity has a state title to defend, and there’s no reason to believe they won’t do so.

But don’t count out… Holland. Just because they lost to Unity once this season (but then again, who hasn’t?) doesn’t necessarily mean a second potential match-up when it counts will have the same result.

District #28

Teams: Forest Hills Eastern, East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Catholic Central, Grand Rapids Christian, Forest Hills Northern, Ottawa Hills, Wyoming Park, Wyoming Rogers

The Lowdown: If any district in West Michigan is up for grabs, this is it. Three of these teams (Forest Hills Eastern, Forest Hills Northern, and Catholic Central) have appeared somewhere in the Division II state rankings throughout the season, though Forest Hills Eastern is the only one still in. Catholic Central recently beat both Forest Hills Eastern and Forest Hills Northern, 1-0. Wyoming Park has lost a couple recent games, though their most recent loss was to Northview, the #2 team in Division II.

Players to Watch: Brandon VanHees (Wyoming Park); Chris Hindenach (Catholic Central)

Prediction: Catholic Central. Just because a team isn’t in the state rankings doesn’t mean they aren’t talented.

But don’t count out… Forest Hills Eastern. Forest Hills Northern. Wyoming Park. Any of these four teams could definitely move on into regionals.

District #29

Teams: Comstock Park, Coopersville, Fruitport, Grand Rapids Creston, Kenowa Hills, Northview, Sparta, Spring Lake

The Lowdown: Northview has maintained consistent possession of the #2 spot in Division II all season long. They have won all but one game this season: a 3-3 tie with Unity on Aug. 30. Spring Lake has also had an impressive season and is easily on top of the Lakes 8 Conference with not one conference loss all season.

Players to Watch: T.J. Van Slooten (Northview); Adam Clauss (Spring Lake)

Prediction: Northview has everything they need to make a deep run in the state tournament and shouldn’t have much trouble advancing to regionals.

But don’t count out… Spring Lake. They haven’t played most of the teams in this district, but they’ve been playing well for much of the season.

Pure electricity. The sights, the sounds, the energy was inescapable. In Middleville’s dug in stadium, there was no outside world. This was it, Middleville (4-0) versus Grand Rapids Catholic Central (3-1). Sitting 15 feet below the asphalt parking lots, Bob White Stadium was alive. And to this day, I contend that I’ve never seen or felt as great of home field advantage as I did Friday night.

Sure, I could throw out some out numbers and package it in a game summary, but that would be a disservice to not only Middleville, but to the high school football world. This wasn’t a ‘win or lose, go home, watch tape, and get back to practice’ kind of football game. It was bigger than that. Much bigger.

It was as big as right tackle Adrian Foster and the white scuffs on his battered helmet. As big as the interception by Coley McKeough with 48 seconds left in the game. As big as the 35-yard game winning field goal by Nate Iveson.

Nate Iveson’s 35-yard game winning FG and the ensuing madness from Varsity News Network on Vimeo.

It was as big as the hugs between Trojan head coach Chad Ruger and his staff, emotionally exhausted after their 31-28 win over no. 2 ranked Catholic Central. Their eyes wide gazed and stretched to their vertical limits, Friday night had to be the best sleep they’d ever have as they dreamt about that magical game.

But Saturday morning had to be Coley McKeough’s best birthday.

For three years, the starting quarterback has endured lose after lose after lose. And, not to put a finer point on it, they weren’t pretty losses. But after the fourth week of his senior, McKeough has his team in the driver seat looking like an OK Gold beauty.

“It feels really good,” he said. “We knew at some point we’d take one from these guys.”

It was McKeough who took it away from Catholic Central. An astute student of the game, he read the Cougar’s offense perfectly.

“They were running W-Read all night, outside guy runs a corner, inside guy runs a wheel.” “I just made a play.”

On their previous drive, the Cougars drove down the field on an 85-yard touchdown pass from Miles Morrissey to John Haley. With less than two minutes left in the game, it was very possible that those two could’ve connected for another long score. But McKeough didn’t let that happen.

The senior quarterback finished with 105 yards rushing and three touchdowns while going 11-for-14 for 61 yards with a touchdown pass to Jesse Aubil. Dylan Van Putten led the Trojans rushing with 114 yards on 23 carries.

Morrissey went 13-for-23 for 250 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Haley was his favorite target with 149 yards and both touchdowns on five catches. Bronson Hill led the team in rushing with 85 yards and two scores on 14 carries.
