It seems like every fall, a football team emerges that is simply better than its opposition. A team that dominates all aspects of the game on a consistent basis. Often it’s multiple teams, as it was last year with Holland Christian, Muskegon, Muskegon Oakridge and Muskegon Catholic Central (Muskegon County owned 2008).

But even the best teams, undefeated clubs like those already mentioned, don’t come close to matching up with the particular brand of whoopin that Mendon is unleashing on their unfortunate opponents this year.

Take a look at the schedule so far, through week-6, from Mlive.com.

Mendon Football -- 2009 Schedule

Anything stand out?

How about nothing. Zero, zilch, nada, nien, nyet.

As in, the precise amount of points scored on the Hornets through week-6. After ironically failing to score a point in a 33-0 loss to Muskegon Catholic Central in the 2008 Division-8 state finals, the Hornets have beaten their six opponents in 2009 by a combined score of 260-0. With their three remaining regular season opponents a combined 8-10, it’s entirely feasible that Mendon finish the regular season without allowing a point.

This week should be relatively easy, going against St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic (2-4). And week-9 should as well, when they take on the 1-5 Covert Bulldogs. Essentially, the remaining roadblock is against the 5-1 Bronson Vikings in week-8. If they can shut out the Vikings, it’s smooth sailing to the island of the unscoredupon.

The last team to see that elusive island? The 1995 Dearborn Pioneers, who shut out their first 10 opponents before getting shut out themselves in week-11 (they subsequently had to leave the island).

While much can (and likely will) be said regarding the ethics of demoralizing your opponent in such a way, criticisms along that line may be questionable — tough to say they’re running up the score considering the fact that Mendon has scored a mere 23-points in the 4th quarter all season. It seems that Mendon may be simply that much better than their opponents. To the point that even their reserves dominate.

One could make a legitimate claim that Mendon’s schedule is on the easy side, as WMA contributor AGF did recently on Searn’s board:

Mendon’s opponents thus far are a combined 15-21. Not a brutal schedule either. I mean for a class C “powerhouse” like Mendon to play a schedule with two class D schools and only one B school on it……? And I don’t want to hear any “nobody will play us” crap. Class D Muskegon Catholic is playing a schedule that consist of 2 C schools, 4 B schools, and 2 A schools! For comparison MCC played one class D school in Frankfort. Final score 35-0. Imagine that, a shut out.

A valid argument, I’ll admit.

But at this point, since the schedule has been set in stone for months and is therefore in this context the equivalent of spilled milk, I’m going to conveniently overlook any such argument in the name of excitement and history (sorry, AGF), and officially start pulling for the Hornets to shut out their schedule. Besides, easy schedule or not (I’m choosing “not”), allowing zero points for 9-consecutive games is a dynamite accomplishment.

What do you think? Is Mendon piling on? The beneficiaries of an easy schedule? That darn good? Sound off in the comments.
