Another pivotal match-up in the OK Red conference was in store Tuesday night when the Grand Haven Buccaneers hosted the East Kentwood Falcons. The pair had met previously in the season with the Falcons winning 60-49 at home. Grand Haven entered Tuesday nights contest just a mere game over five hundred at 6-5 on the season and were looking to shake things up in the OK Red. The Falcons sat one game out of first place in the conference and were aiming to not create any more space between them and conference foes Hudsonville and Rockford. The Buccaneers fell behind early and played from behind the whole night. Giving a strong effort late the Buccaneers were unable to overcome the quickness and athleticism of East Kentwood in a 58-49 loss.
East Kentwood and Falcons guard Jaylen Carter got off to a hot start early taking a quick 7-0 lead with Carter scoring 10 first quarter points on his way to tallying a game high 19. In the second quarter Buccaneer guard Alex Eidson began to hit his stride knocking down a pair of triples en route an 8 point quarter for the senior.
East Kentwood would still remain in the lead at the half 25-17. The Falcons had little trouble beating the 2-3 zone of the Buccaneers throughout the night while Grand Haven struggled to hit its stride in the first half offensively and careless turnovers plagued the Buccaneers specifically in the third quarter. During the third was where Grand Haven had their best opportunity of the night to close the gap between them and the Falcons when they cut the lead to five and had possession of the ball before the mid-range jumper from Danny Cotter failed to fall and East Kentwood’s Tavon Robinson banked a shot off the glass on the opposite end. Both teams turned things up a notch in the fourth quarter recording 44 points between the two as Eidson and Jeremy Lattig of the Buccaneers got their shots dialed in and the Falcons Quaye Cobbs repeatedly found his way to the foul line . In the end Grand Haven continued to battle down the stretch outscoring the Falcons in the fourth but it was too little to late as the Buccaneers fell for the second time this season to East Kentwood.
The Falcons found most their production tonight from Carter’s 19 points, Robinson’s 14, and Cobbs 11 including a nice make shown here.
For the Buccaneers Eidson led with 17 while Lattig contributed with another 12 and Matt Kroll added 7 as he effectively was able to get to the rim when given the opportunity. Grand Haven moves to 6-6 on the year and will next host the Muskegon Big Reds while East Kentwood improves to 11-2 and will play host to the West Ottawa Panthers this Friday night.
