Northview Dominates in match up with Holland

Both Holland and Northview came into Tuesday nights contest looking to avoid an 0-2 start. The Northview Wildcats fell to WMA’s number four ranked Grand Rapids Catholic Central in their season opener last Friday night while the Holland Dutch were defeated by WMA’s number two ranked Godwin Heights. Northview overcame a fast Holland start to gain the lead in the second and propel themselves to a 63-44 win.

Holland came out strong going to 6’8” senior Coreontae DeBerry who attacked the inside of Northviews defense for six first quarter points. Holland worked their way to a nine point lead early by a score of 16-7 just over the three minute mark. The turning point of the quarter and for that fact the game may have been when Northviews Darren Kapustka swiped the ball from Holland recording a steal and running the floor for an easy lay up at the other end with two minutes remaining in the quarter. As the first quarter came to an end Holland had the lead at 18-13.

With the momentum shifting Northviews way in the beginning of the second Holland seemingly began to rush their play resulting in turnovers and poor shot selections. The second quarter was when Kapustka, who led all scorers on the night with 21 really began to hit his mark. With 3:03 remaining in the half Kapustka nailed a jumper putting Northview ahead for the first time 24-23. Kapustka outscored the entire Holland team 9-7 in the second quarter which led to a 27-25 halftime lead for Northview.

The second half was all Northview from the start as they began the half on a 15-3 run and ended the third quarter by hitting a buzzer beating three from the corner by Ryan Ruschmann. Holland struggled to answer as they could not find any kind of rhythm in the second half. The Wildcats were only unable to shut down Trent Windemuller of the Dutch who led his team with 19.  Northview did a great job of keeping DeBerry out of the post and forcing bad shots from the remaining Holland players en route to their first win of the season.

Holland will continue to look for their first win of the season when they host Kenowa Hills and Northview aims for two in a row when they travel to Grand Rapids Creston on Friday night.
