We’re working hard to bring you some amazing coverage and your input is vital to us. Who is getting robbed? Who is overrated? We encourage the fans of WMA to let us know what they think. Here are our rankings of the top ten basketball teams in West Michigan with some honorable mentions as well.
1.) Grand Rapids Christian (1-0)
The Eagles glided to an easy victory over South Christian this week and now turn their attention to Rockford on Tuesday. We will have complete coverage of that game for you right here Tuesday night.
2.) Godwin Heights (2-0)
The Wolverines took a win over Holland on Tuesday and continued that momentum as they took down what could be a pretty solid Sparta team 74-64. The development of other scorers around Kevin Badger will be vital for this team.
3.) Muskegon Heights (2-0)
Alright, quite simply I owe the Tigers an apology for our week 1 rankings. They were made before a single game was played and honestly after the loss of Deontae Hudson I didn’t know what to expect. The reality is they thumped Big Rapids by 18 and then beat up on Rockford by 13 for good measure.
4.) Grand Rapids Catholic Central (1-0)
The three-headed junior monster was on display Friday night in the Cougars 74-66 victory over Northview. This team is going to be good for awhile, plenty of work still to be done but keep an eye on this team.
5.) Muskegon (1-1)
A blowout win for the Big Reds over Reethes-Puffer was followed up by a Saturday loss to Benton Harbor 71-67 on their home floor. Muskegon is still VERY good and will involved at the top at the end of the year.
6.) Northview (0-1)
A home opening loss is tough to swallow, especially when you have such high expectations for your team. Northview suffered that fate on Friday with Catholic Central in town but it will only make this team grow more. Tuesday’s battle with Holland will feature two teams that dropped their openers and will now look to avoid 0-2.
7.) East Grand Rapids (0-0)
The Pioneers had the benefit of not hosting a home game last week, they didn’t play at all and will tip off their season on Friday at Greenville.
8.) Hudsonville (0-1)
A home loss to neighboring Zeeland East is not exactly what Coach Eric Elliot and crew had in mind to start their 2011-12 campaign. Foul trouble hurt the Eagles all night and teams are going to look at shutting Blake Hibbits down and making others beat you.
9.) Tri Unity Christian (2-0)
First Rogers by 25 and then Freedom Christian by 43, needless to say the Defenders are back. Just as we expected them to be.
10.) Rockford (0-1)
The Rams dropped their home opener (seemed to be a trend in week 1) against Heights and things don’t get any easier for Coach Nick Allen, who will welcome in GR Christian on Tuesday as his squad attempts to bounce back.
Honorable Mentions (in no order)
Holland (0-1)
The Dutch looked lost on Tuesday as they fell to Godwin Heights by 22. I have no doubt this team will find it’s way, the good news is the OK Black is wide open.
Montague and Shelby are both sitting at 2-0 and will square off on Friday, look for the winner of that one to be up top next week. We will have total coverage from Montague on Friday!
East Kentwood (2-0) has looked very good so far and will be in an interesting Holiday Tournament with Catholic Central, could be a dream match-up around the Holidays.
Zeeland East is 2-0 with a pair of wins over OK Red teams which will bode well for the Chix down the stretch.
Ottawa Hills also bodes a strong team this year with Shakur Sanders leading the charge, it’s gonna be a nice race between the Bengals and Cougars in the OK Gold.
We hope to see you out at a game and will keep you posted on where we will be. Don’t forget that we will update you every Monday on the new WMA rankings. Again feel free to discuss below!
