West Catholic overmatched by Orchard Lake St. Mary’s

Soph. Andy Corey returns a kick off in first half action.

Losing 35-0 to visiting Orchard Lake St. Mary’s wasn’t the way they wanted to start their campaign for a repeat of 2010′s Division 5 state title, but West Catholic’s football program is focused on learning from the experience.

“Our goal today was to come out and see if we could compete at the highest level,” said West Catholic coach Dan Rohn.  “It’s frustrating that we kind of went back on our heels, because that’s no way to play football.  But even though our morale is hurt a little bit, I think we can learn from it and become a better football team.”

The Eaglets from OLSM were the better football team, scoring four on the ground and one in the air en route to a 35-0 halftime lead.  The second half running clock allowed only a pair of drives per team before the final whistle blew.

It’s a long season.  Better to get this one out of the way early.

GRWC Takeaways:

  • Quarterback Tommy Staskiewicz has the chops.  He showed flashes of mobility and accuracy Friday night, despite the bad circumstances.
  • Tailback Jalin Faison is a dangerous weapon.  Most effective in the open field, the Falcons will be looking for ways to get him in space this year.
