WMA previews District 50 B hosted by Godwin Heights.

This district at Godwin Heights is loaded with talent as we have seen in many West Michigan brackets. Four of these six teams have had great seasons and are capable of all taking each other down.

Team Overall Record Conf. Record Head-to-head
Grand Rapids Christian 19-1 10-0 1-0
Godwin Heights 17-3 11-1 3-0
Wyoming Kelloggsville 15-4 8-3 1-2
Grand Rapids South Christian 14-5 10-4 1-1
Wyoming Park 8-12 8-6 2-1
Wyoming Rogers 2-17 2-12 0-4

Christian has been great all year along with Godwin Heights. Kelloggsville and South Christian can also turn some heads in this bracket.

Wyoming Rogers- the Golden Hawks have had a season to forget although they have played some good teams close at times. The wins haven’t followed however. DaVaughn Stimage has been the leading scorer for the Golden Hawks all year but it’s going to take a total team effort for Rogers to make any noise this post season.

Wyoming Park- the Vikings have been used to success over the past decade winning 6 league titles in that time span. The last few years haven’t been as kind to Park however as they only won five games last year and improved slightly this year with 8. Big man Casey Mott has led the Vikings this year and regardless of who comes out of the first round match-up WP will have their hands full in the second round.

South Christian- the Sailors are led by senior point guard Drew Stegehuis and have a very solid team around him. I like the way the Sailors play and drawing Rogers in the first round helps a lot, an early season loss to Christian needs to be forgotten however. The Eagles ran by SC for a 19 point victory to kick off the season but I think that the Sailors are a better team now as compared to then. If they can find a way to beat Christian then who knows..?

Wyoming Kelloggsville- the Rockets are led by Teshon Walton who’s averaging 14.3 points a game. Two of the 3 league losses for Kelloggsville were to GH, both by double digits. The first round match-up is rough for the Rockets but if they can find a way to move beyond the Wolverines then a District final may just be in the future. Playing the host in the opener is never a good draw though..

Godwin Heights- the Fighting Wolverines can win this District, there is no question about that in my eyes. The amount of talent that GH can put on the floor can only be matched by Christian and even then I think the Wolverines can hang. Kevin Badger has bee tremendous all year and Heights is great on the glass. Outside shooting as always can be a bugaboo but a good game out of Godwin Heights is enough to take down almost anybody. They will open with OK Silver foe Kelloggsville whom they took down twice this year, will it prove to be tough to beat a team 3 times in a year or is this the year Godwin makes a run at the District?

Grand Rapids Christian- the Eagles were at the top of our weekly rankings all year until the one loss at Union. They are a deep team with plenty of size and athleticism. Freshman Drake Harris has been the talk of the town but fellow Eagles Jaylin Staten, Matt Grasmeyer and Jordan Daley are the glue to this team. A final with Godwin Heights would be a great game setting the winner up well for Regionals.

My prediction is for South Christian to move beyond Rogers in the first round and get their date with Christian. Godwin should move by Kelloggsville although that will be a good game. The winner of the GH v Kellogg game should advance to the finals through Wyoming Park. Christian better come out ready because SC will be ready to avenge that early season loss. The Eagles should find a way to win. I have Christian and Godwin Heights in the final, this will be a great game as many of these district finals will be. Home court should play a vital role, but I’m not sure if it will be enough. Christian has been at the top all year long and I would like to see what they can do moving forward.
