Jenison came into Tuesday night’s contest looking to play spoiler to East Kentwood’s quest for an OK Red title, and managed to pull within five late, but in the end the Falcons were just too much for the Wildcats to handle, as they won 70-62.
The Wildcats held onto a slim 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Falcons countered in the second with a flurry of points, outscoring Jenison 30-19, allowing them to take a 40-32 lead into the half. In the second half both teams played one another to a stalemate, East Kentwood taking the third quarter 17-13, Jenison taking the fourth with the same 17-13 score.
The Falcons were benefactors from hot outside shooting, drilling six shots from beyond the arc. They also showed good discipline on defense, committing only 18 fouls. Despite being limited on their trips to the free throw line, Jenison took advantage of those trips, shooting an impressive 81% on freebies as a team (17-21).
East Kentwood had three players score in double digits tonight. Fred Brown, a senior, led all scorers with 22 points. He was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe and knocked home two three pointers. Jeremiah Williams and Micah Gates, both seniors, each scored 10 for the Falcons.
Freshman Luke Diekevers scored 14 points to lead the Wildcats, he was one of four Jenison players in double digits. Tyler Fredricks (junior) and Jason Pretzer (senior) each had 12, and Casey Block (senior) had 10. Interestingly enough, these were the only four Wildcats to attempt free throws.
With East Kentwood’s win the Falcons are now 10-3 in the conference and 14-4 overall. A win tonight by Rockford means a huge showdown is set for Friday, and the fate of the OK Red will hang in the balance. Rockford fought their way back, winning a thrilling overtime game at East Kentwood a few weeks ago, so the rematch should prove to be classic. Be sure to check back with West Michigan All Star for complete coverage of the big game.
Jenison’s loss drops them to 5-7 in the OK Red, and 10-7 overall. They will play host to the Muskegon Big Reds on Friday night.
