Dzenan Catic named Michigan Player of the Year by Gatorade

What do Peyton Manning, Kevin Garnett and Derek Jeter have in common? Aside from being some of the most recognizable names in professional sports, all three athletes were once Gatorade Players of the Year. East Kentwood’s Dzenan Catic is now also part of that elite group.

Catic, the 2010 Mr. Soccer, was selected by Gatorade and ESPN RISE as the 2010 Gatorade Michigan Boys Soccer Player of the Year on Wednesday. This award, given to one individual in the state, makes Catic eligible to be the National Boys Soccer Player of the Year, which will be announced in May.

Though Catic’s soccer skills certainly played a large role both in East Kentwood’s championship season, the player of the year is not chosen simply on his or her athletic accomplishments. Gatorade evaluates players in athletic achievement, academic excellence and exemplary character in making their selection. Catic’s 45 goals, 23 assists, 3.85 GPA and volunteer work as a youth soccer coach and referee all factored in the selection process.

Catic plans to continue his soccer career next year at Michigan State.
