VOTING OPEN: 2010 West Michigan Baseball Allstars

The polls are now open to vote for the 2010 West Michigan Baseball Allstars.

The West Michigan Allstars is a team consisting of the best-of-the-best players from around West Michigan, as determined by you, the voters. This team is only possible with the help from our awesome sponsors, ESPN 96.1FM and Davenport University, so after you’re done voting remember to listen to 96.1FM and play sports for the Panthers.

Unlike the annual newspaper awards and All-Star teams, the players, coaches and fans get a say in which of the many outstanding players around West Michigan make the cut. You decide which players advance from local standout athlete, to West Michigan Allstar. And it all starts here.

Compiled from your nominations, here are the nominees for the 2010 West Michigan Baseball Allstars. Please select the two pitchers, one catcher, four infielders and three outfielders who would make up your ideal team, were you drafting a team right now.

The polls will close at midnight on Wednesday night (June 2). Remember, you can only vote once. So make it count!

I’m sure he is not bothered by this slight, but FHE’s Taylor Pawlanta (SS,RP), is deserving of being on the list for infielders. His scholarship to Aquinas should be proof enough that he is an elite player in west michigan.

    • Matt

Are you kidding, i am glad that he is playing for Aquinas and he has a scholarship to play baseball but he isn’t all that. I seen him play in school and in the summer and he lacks arm strength and if you are a coach you have to agree with me. Great kid but he is not one of the best infielders in Western Michigan.

      • Kid

You have to be serious though, if devon ivy can be in the poll then there is no doubt that Taylor Pawlanta should be in the listings. The Hawks went 25-3-1 in the regular season and a great portion of defense and offense has come from him.

      • Diamonds Thunder 16u

If you want to disreguard Taylor because you saw him play last year and didn’t think his arm strength was good,… you haven’t seen him play this year.
His D has been above average, but his bat has helped FHE to their best record ever.
Everyone knows Gold Gloves are given to very good fielders that can hit…otherwise Inge would be a sure thing every year. If you are still unsure, look at this…

        • mamalovesbaseball

Thanks so sharing! It is so great to see these young men have opportunities to pursue their baseball careers at the next level. My son is personally hoping to do the same thing. Great for Taylor! I’ve personally seen him play and he is a great ball player. How did he receive a Gold Glove? Sorry for my ignorance on this issue.

          • Diamonds Thunder 16u

Gold Gloves are given to MLB players for being the best defensive players in their position. Often, great defensive players are overlooked for good defensive players that hit better. Hope that helps.

  • ray

    West Ottawa’s Troy Stango

    • Evan

This kid wasn’t all that great to me

      • ray

He should have finished with 6-1 in the ok red and the losses came from his team not hitting the ball, or fielding errors. He probably has one of the lowest earned run average in the ok red.

  • Tim

Looks like we have the Hamilton community coming out and voting for their kids. Really throws off this whole voting to who is actually the top players in WM.

    • JD

Tim, so who are actually the top players??????????????

    • Hawks Numba 1

at least we have a supportive community unlike a lot of others and how does that exactly “throw off the voting?” That’s what I thought

GO HAMILTON! YOU DESERVE IT! ONLY 1 LOSS!

      • jon

        how were districts??

  • Hawks #1

Hamilton coming out to vote doesn’t throw the vote it is called supporting your team and who is best and obviously that is Hamilton. Go Hawks, you have a great team this year. A great group of kids on and off the field!

  • Vote shows who is best

Hamilton players or not these boys have been consitant and good for 4 years now. If the Hamilton community is out to support them good for them, they are some of the best in West Michigan! The fact that some of them are baseball scholarship players should speak for itself.

  • GOOO Hamilton

HAHAHA! “Tim,” you speak as if the Hamilton is HUGEEEEE. You might wanna do a little research, hm?
The voting is fair as well, you can only vote once. Just like in baseball, the Hamilton community is playing by the rules.
& even if JUST the Hamilton community is voting, isn’t that what this web page is for? SUPPORTING YOUR TEAM & GREAT PLAYERS.
…the fact that these Hamilton players were nominated shows that they’re on here for a reason.
Good job Hamilton community on voting & supporting YOUR baseball team that has made amazing accomplishments this year!

    • OKRed

Just so You know hamilton fan…..its not a huge accomplishment that they are nominated…to be nominated you dont need good numbers lots of home runs, or a good BA. you simply could nominate the worst player if you wanted and then call up all of your friends and family and have them vote, and even worse then that…you can nominate yourself…wich sadly enough I saw a few kids did. so dont get to jacked up about this….by the way…how many hamilton kids are playing ball in college next year?

      • OK Green

Out of the 10 seniors on the Hamilton team, 6 are playing college ball next year. 3 of which were nominated, and the other 3 were not.

  • OK Red Fan

The OK Red is represented by 6 or 7 kids? Kids are going DI, DII, DII, NAIA, JC – sorry your list doesn’t represent West Michigan…

  • Bert Peterski

I couldn’t quite get the comments part to work for me with regards to nominating players for the All-Star team. I’m not real good with technology, but I can e-mail. Here are my nominees from Grand Ledge who is 31-0 in Division 1. I know the whole team can’t be nominted, but it does take a whole team to do that well and sustain success for that long a period of time. Not easy to do for young kids and all they have going on in their lives.
I’ve seen them play and have watched their progress, so I know a bit about them.
Here are the kids who the scouts (like me) are looking at: Sr. Grant Householder, P/DH; Sr. Alex Davison, P/OF; Jr. Tyler Park Baker P/INF; Sr. Travis Ward, INF. All four are batting over .500. All except Davison (committed to Bowling Green) have 7 or more HR’s. The team itself has over 50 HR’s, so there are a few other candidates hitting over .400 with 5 or more HR’s and obviously none of the pitchers have a loss, but I understand the nominees from one team can’t be huge. I happened to attend the 5 inn and 3 inn. mercy games vs. Lowell this weekend. It was a quick day for GL. It would be great if this info could be communicated with the people on MLive also, so this team and its players receive their due recognition from as large of an audience as possible.

  • Diamonddad

where are the coaches nominated ??

  • Question

How does a player get nominated? How about Infielder (SS) Andrew Schuch from Forest Hills Central?

  • Bill Tomcala

    Let’s go West Ottawa!

  • klmbcnu

Just goes to show you what “Community” is all about and with “Community” support comes a great bunch of kids!!!! Go HAWKS!!!!!!!!

  • SMS

About time Sparta got some recognition!!

  • Hawkeye Fan

    Way to go, Hawkeyes!
Once again this year, you guys did awesome!!!
The Hamilton Community supports you 100%!

  • ray

How many of the hamilton baseball players are going to school on baseball scholarships? They are in the ok green and could’nt compare to playing in the ok red with the big boys. Did’nt West Ottawa hand them their first loss? West Ottawa also handed Hudsonville their first loss and yet their not mentioned in the rankings? West Ottawa has gone undefeated in every tournament in the last 2 years. Just to sum it up-OK RED is the toughest division in West Michigan.

  • voice of the hawks

I do believe these are individual accomplishments not “team” accomplishments, which in a team sport is kind of silly. But we are not looking at schedules or records, simply how well these kids have performed on an individual basis at their position. You can’t even compare who won which game and which division ect. It is like comparing apples to oranges. These are INDIVIDUAL accomplishments Lets just hope they can all play as a TEAM and make a run.

  • mamalovesbaseball

How exciting for all of those young men who have been nominated! I have seen many of you play, and you are ALL amazing players. Everyone is a winner! I did watch those awesome baseball players from Hamilton. I witnessed this incredible pitcher from the Muskegon ChannelCats 17U team this past summer who held this incredible to 1 hit. Wow ~ Way to go Drew Johnson! I think he is from Reeths-Puffer. All of you are winners because mama knows her baseball.

  • mamalovesbaseball

Alex Laketos is the best pitcher I have seen this year! Good fast ball mid 90s and really good slider! Mama loves baseball! Vote for him!

  • OK Green

Carter DeBoe (Hamilton) has hit some of the hardest hits that I’ve seen in any high school games. I’d like to see him get a chance to play in this all star game.

  • Baseball guy

Hamilton has been waiting for this season since the kids started playing organized ball….Ken DeGood,Jon Henrickson, Glen Mudd and many others have turned this program around from being a middle of the pack team to having a contending, top notch program. The 3 players nominated for this all star team are very deserving. Jason H. has signed a letter of intent to play at Davenport, and Andrew D will be playing at Trine Univ…Carter Deboe is undecided yet, but has an individual work out at the #1 JUCO school in the country in July(College of Southern Nevada)…good luck to the hawkeyes in the tourney, and good luck to the 3 individuals in this all star voting.

  • mamalovesbaseball

So happy for Hamilton boys and all the boys that have been playing since they have been playing organized ball. All these kids deserve to feel great about their accomplishments. Kudos to every one of you!

Good luck to all in their upcoming tournaments~!!!

  • Nancy McClelland

    go Adam Miller

  • RP

Drew Johnson and Ryan Wagenmaker from Reeths-Puffer

  • Ron Leach

this team is always filled with Forest Hills Central kids. They are historically way overrated playing in a bandbox field. There conference is TERRIBLE and now someone wants Andrew Schuck or Kyle VanderArk on All area? Kyle did not even make all conference!! Let’s have a little credibility to this team. Last year VanderArk had twice as many votes as Derrick Dennis or Torston Boss!!!

    • Diamonds Thunder 16u

That’s funny… and if true, there is NO credibility to this poll.

  • Mike Adams

    Zane Metz-Lakeshore

    • L. Spitzer

      Yeah, Zane Metz !!!!!

  • Bill

What about Zeeland West centerfielder Aaron Thimm?

  • Katie

    Good Luck Tyler!

  • ivanka

    Tylor,good luck…

  • Big Sam

Good luck Drew and Ryan! All the years of playing ball have paid off for just getting nominated. The icing on the cake would be among the top vote getters. But remember, you are both winners for even getting this opportunity. You both are amazing ball players ~ Drew and Ryan ~ GOOD LUCK!

  • Mrs. Mac

    Go for it….

    Drew Johnson — Reeths-Puffer
    Jamie Potts — Oakridge
    Drew Johnson — Reeths-Puffer

  • Mr. Holmes

I live on the SouthEast part of Michigan and see a lot of amateur baseball along with coaching a travel team. Twice this year I have watched Spring Lake play. The player that really stands out for SL is their catcher Drew Bracket. This young man has the qualities I look for in a catcher; footwork, intelligence, toughness, arm strength and the ability to manage a pitcher. I don’t know what his batting average is but from what I saw the young man can hit.

  • Ashley

Tyle Huntey is a phenomenal catcher. His scholarship to go play at Central Michigan is proof enough. He is a hard worker and goes above and beyond to improve his performance. His stats are proof enough: batting average: .505; 11 home runs; 20 doubles; slugging percentage Is over 1.00.
He makes a play and hard hit hen his teams does or does not need it. Not to mention if he isn’t catching he is pitching for his team; he is always playing a vital role for his team. Stats are what should be looked at when you’re voting…and Tyler Huntey from Morley Stanwood clearly has them for catchers.

  • Mr. Laker

Drew Bracket is currently hitting 3.87 with 27 RBI’s and only 8 strikeouyts in 93 at bats. and 11 stolen bases

  • EK Falcon Fan

    Nominate from East Kentwood also
    Gavin Trevino OF
    Micah Block INF

  • Koz

Go Tyler! You are a great talent! We wish you the best of luck!

  • OK Conference

What about robby enslen? Infielder from Middleville who tore it up on the mound and at the plate? Or Mitch Patterson who went 7-1 this year and hit over 400 at the plate? This is so uncredible, it’s a joke.

    • Diamonds Thunder 16u

Kid is a stud. GREAT hitter. Tore up FHE pitching, enough said.

  • Credible

One more thing, you have players in the outfield catagory that are infielders and vice versa, you might want to get the positions right at least.

  • Ryan

Micheal Meade didnt even make all conference? and might have barley been above .500 on the mound.

Ron Leach- The reason Vanderark got more votes last year than dennnis and torston is b/c his dad runs this site, something fishy is going on here? Along with what, 7 FHC players on this list? Did you just post their roster on the voting list or what?

    • mame

Michael Meade may have not made all conference, but the teams he pitched against were all the conference teams..not nonconference teams. And if you really want to complain about others, then why is Mitch Patterson not on the list. And Ferris and Lakatos should be above any Hamilton kids! This is not a true showing of how kids play…it’s a popularity contest!

  • Bender

Grandvilles ace brendan bender isnt on the list? He shut out west Ottowa, hudsonville, and jenison.. really? common now, do your research.

  • http://www.westmiallstar.com/ Ryan Vaughn

    Couple clarifications:

    1. Kyle Vander Ark’s dad does not run this site. I do.

    2. I have no affiliation with any school involved in this contest. The nominees were compiled EXCLUSIVELY through your submissions as readers during a 1-week timeframe that stretched between May 19-26. The players you see on this nominee list are the players who were nominated by WMA readers during this timeframe.

I really appreciate the enthusiasm, but it’s getting pretty negative now. Please keep it positive.

  • ray

bender did’nt beat hudsonville. Grandville lost twice to Hudsonville. The only teams that beat Hudsonville in the ok red were Rockford and West Ottawa. I dont know who pitched for Rockford and got the win, but the West Ottawa pitcher with the win was Troy Stango.

  • ray

West Ottawa got one loss to Grandville and it was because of 3 unearned runs, not because bender shut them down.

  • Who Cares

Its bad when you are attacking student athletes, lets have some fun with this and keep it a possitive experience for all the young men who were nominated on his list, on the names I see on this list, all great student athletes and will go on from this and become great young men in our society…..

  • BG

    GO HAWKEYES!!!

  • Nolan Ryan

Vote for Jamie Potts he reminds me of myself 105 mph fastball, kneebucking curve ball, and unreal changeup not to mention his slider, 80 innings pitched 189 K’S 12-0 .46 ERA kid is a stud

    • Diamonds Thunder 16u

I hope the Tigers draft him!!!

  • mamalovesbaseball

Mama is excited for all of these players, but let’s keep it real. I’ve seen Potts pitch and he is amazing. We should keep the facts correct for ALL players. The fastest pitcher I have seen this year is Alex from Forest Hills at mid 90s. Be careful not to inflate facts too far out there. Then things begin to get nasty on the site which isn’t the nominated individuals fault. Keep it real and remember these are ALL dynamite young men who ALL have bright futures. :)

  • Deon Smith

I figured Devon Ivy wont get many votes because of his teams record, but this kid is a 3 sport athlete and the things he is doing on the baseball field after playing football and basketball. He has about 6 doubles this year, 2 triples, and 2 homeruns (inside the park, and ove the fence). Plus doing a solid job playing short stop as well. Also to top it off playing AAU in the mix of things as well.

  • okgreencoach

Not sure why Josh DeJonge is nominated for outfield? He is an infielder for Zeeland West. And an average one at best.

    • NothingAmazing

Im a coach in the Ok Green and shame on you for saying that… Id really like to know what team your coming from to think that you can call out a player like that when you probably saw him twice all season. My guess is Ott or Wyckoff would say this.. None of the other coaches have class as low as this.

  • DK

Cale Hand from west ottawa should be on there.

  • to funny

you people dont have a clue Devon Ivy lol way to to funny….some of the kids you have nominated nice but wtf….

  • mamalovesbaseball

Really was that necessary “to funny”. I think it is TOO funny that you don’t know the correct form of TOO to use. As stated by several individuals earlier in the voting, why do some people have to be so NEGATIVE. Let’s face it…there are SEVERAL good baseball players in West Michigan. My family enjoys watching Derrick Dennis on the Big 10 all the time. Let’s appreciate the amazing West Michigan athletes and cherish the enjoyment that we receive watching them play ball whether they are on this list or not. Personal attacks against individuals that WERE NOMINATED by someone else is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Hit a home run with POSITIVE feedback. Let’s STRIKE OUT all the negativity and unnecessary rude comments towards these young men. :) Support them all!

    • Diamonds Thunder 16u

      Mama just hit a HomeRun…

  • to funny

im sorry Devon!!!!! You kids did great you all deserve a shot..Good luck…..

    • mamalovesbaseball

Thank you for turning that strike out into a home run with rescinding your comment. Much appreciation for keeping it positive. :)

  • HAWKEYE DAD

Gotta love them hawkeye”s!Keep them sticks alive in districts.

  • Diamonds Thunder 16u

Alex Lakatos is one of the best pitchers to come out of the Grand Rapids area since Dave Rozema (GR Central) or Phil Regan(Wayland). I’d be surprised if he’s not drafted in the top 5 rounds of the MLB draft this year. If so, he’ll skip college BB and go pro.
Surprising he’s not being voted into our all-area team. Not even top 5 in the voting???

    • mamalovesbaseball

Totally agree. When we played against him, wow…what an arm! Best of luck to Alex in his future endeavors. We cannot wait for him to turn pro and my son can say “Hey, he pitched to me. Great fast ball!” Our family will be definitely watching and supporting him.

  • http://yahoo.com Kaleb

JAmie Potts tears it up!!!! We somebody can throw a 87 mph wiht a 75 mph curveball and knuckle-curve,and is very strong!!! He is unstoppable, GO Potts

  • congrats all stars!!!

thanks ryan vaughn! good sportsmanship consist of positive great examples! and who do these hard working young ball players have as a positive example in good sportsmanship if it isn’t the adults they are exposed to–whether it be in person or in writing?

with all the hard work and dedication that these kids display and partake in during the season, everyone of them are winners!!!

it simply irks me when adults that put up a fuss and attack with negativity act like this when the hard working players are silent and accepting of the outcome of numbers and scores…

who are the real examples of good sportsmanship? from what i’m seeing, it’s the kids.

for all of you complaining and negative adults, take some great examples from our kids–who are the ones that have put forth the effort and hard work simply because they love the game.

  • CADfan

will there be a picture anywhere on site or in a local paper of the 2010 west michigan allstars?

    • http://www.westmiallstar.com/ Ryan Vaughn

Great idea CADfan! I’ll see what I can put together. If anyone is friends with any of the winners, put the word out and see if they’re interested in getting together for a photo shoot with David Chandler!

      Ryan

  • NothingAmazing

Half you guys are ridiculous. This is a website to vote for people you want to see play… not necessarily who should be. Just like the All-Star game in the MLB. But i agree that DeBoe is one of the top players in the West if not State. Lakatos and Ivy both deserve to be up there for being amazing baseball players.. But again this is just a FAN poll and thats all it should be recognized as.

  • Collin Van Dyke

I dont even got my 2 picks up there this sucks i vote for Tod Sok and Cal Hand outta West Ottawa anyways for there positions this stuffs all politics.

  • Collin Van Dyke

All im saying is Tod Sok and Cal Hand should be in this game Tod as an outfielder who hit .485 on the season and Cal Hand who just pitched a absolute gem against Forest Hills Central in the regional Finals sending them home 8-2. I just love seeing great players be passed up on Stango, Schuch, Tomcala good work to guys u deserve being nominated all i got to say is West Ottawa back to back district Champs, 2009 Regional Runner up, 2010 Regional Champs point proven.
