West Michigan Allstar Top-10 Teams: Basketball Week-11

We here at West Michigan Allstar have done the dirty work, combing the far reaches of the Internet for nuggets of pertinent basketball info until our beards grew dark and the coffee was gone, all to rank the Top-10 basketball teams in West Michigan.  You’ll find the results below.

Along with a team’s record, these rankings take into account quality of wins, talent, synergy,  and a handful of more subjective factors, and may be correctly interpreted as an authoritative list of the top basketball teams in West Michigan.

Lots of shake up at the top of the rankings, so be sure to check out who’s number-1.  We’re also getting down to crunchtime in the season, when teams want to start hitting their stride to prepare for post-season success.

Yeah, ranking teams is a tough business.  But somebody’s got to do it.

Wayland is continuing to play well but faces a tough test at EGR Tuesday… it’ll be fun to see how that one turns out. Good luck ‘Cats!

It should be a great one, for sure! If EGR plays up to their potential, they could give the Cats a run for their money. That said, my money’s on the Cats.

  • Bucs

How is it that Grand Haven moves down in the ratings after giving up a COMBINED 30 points in the second half to EK and Muskegon. I attended both games and don’t recall a SINGLE fastbreak layup from either of those two teams in EITHER half. Sure EK and Musky aren’t the most talented BASKETBALL players in the state but they are by far some of the most ATHLETIC players in the state. Grand Haven’s defense has been arguably the best in West Michigan all year long giving up I want to say maybe 40-45 points a game (don’t have official stats)? Their offense is starting to click and they have a very experienced group of seniors who played for a regional final last year. Look our for the Bucs come tournament time.

Well they didn’t move down, they stayed at the same ranking as they were before. But I do think you’re on to something in lauding the Buccaneers’ defense. They are one tough defensive team, and for that reason are a tough matchup for anyone.

Thanks 4 the love, it is nice to be recognized as #1 in your rankings especially after our guy McCabe dropped us to #2 this week in the Freep. LOL!! I don’t blame him though, Romulus beat the Heights and then BEASTED Sagnasty Arthur Hill… Romulus was my #1 all along, but they got to get it if they cross KCentrals path ;)

if you want to go by who has played who an has the best talent then lets make it simple

Musk Hts #1 just because they have beat more top teams then Kcentral #2 who will play for that area top spot this Friday.
The Giants will win this one if they come to play.
    Gr. Union # 3 undefeated
Wayland # 4 sorry wayland fans Union already beat EGR
Gr. Haven #5 who have they played (oh an musk an EK not true test)

everyone else can just get in line. but really if you want to test your teams talent level, stop worrying about playing 15 – 17 game schedules with teams that you know are not that talented and play 7 – 10 games of good competition from all over the state or out an prepare your teams for the tournament. Regular season really means nothing.

Major props to Musk Heights/K Central/Pershing/Country Day/Saginaw Arthur Hill an other schools that schedule the best

I agree with your wisdom Milo. This site does a great job with the rankings each week, but should we penalize Musk Heights (or any other team) for playing 3 of the top 5 teams in the entire state (i.e. Sag AH, Romulus, and Kzoo Central) in basically one week-10 days. Its possible that Heights could lose all 3, but let’s give them (and any other team) credit for such a Brutal (with a capital B) schedule.

No offense to Wayland and other teams in this poll because they all are having great seasons, but how would any team on this list fair against Sag AH, Romulus, and Kzoo Central, playing them in basically 1 week?

It’s a constant balancing act between record and strength of schedule, and I’ve definitely rehashed this argument in my head myriad times. It could go either way, but ultimately two losses in that short of a timespan had to drop the Tigers down. And similarly, a record of however-many-and-oh like Wayland and GR Union must be recognized, despite other teams’ records.

It’s definitely a toughie. I feel you guys. Thanks for the insight!
